1. Usage

  • Movement detection surveillance is the most common choice. 24h continuous recording can be enabled if together with the detection videos also a continuous recording of the entire day is wished (that will produce 4 videos per day: morning, afternoon, evening and night).
For this usage the default web interface page is summarysnapshot.php
  • Snapshots mode is used for live web cams, the history option will create a movie that shows an entire day in a few seconds. The Snapshot rate can be chosen from the given values and the History video size is set with respect to the full camera size. The Full stretch option sets the default web interface page to the snapshots full stretch page.
For this usage the default web interface pages are snapshothistory.php, snapshot.php or snapshotfull.php
  • Manual record usage is to manually record videos through the red record button or to manually take snapshots through the photo camera button.
For this usage the default web interface page is summarysnapshot.php

Note: in snapshots mode it's still possible to enable motion detection in the bottom toolbar, but the default web interface page is one of the snapshots pages.

2. Name

Enter a camera name which will be used in the camera view's title bar and to access the camera through the web interface. It is also the folder name where all the videos and the snapshots are stored. Leaving the camera name blank will restore the default name.

Attention: not all special characters can be used, ContaCam will replace the unsupported ones by an underscore.

3. Web interface

Set the web interface language and style and see the result in your web browser by pressing its reload button. Thumbnails per page sets the maximum number of Small Videos (animated gifs) shown in the web browser per displayed page. By checking Allow deleting files a trash icon will be shown in the web interface for deleting unnecessary files. Allow obscuring source has to be checked to be able to disable/obscure the video/audio source from within the web interface.

Note: it's also possible to add other languages or to style the web interface with your own css file. The new files have to be placed in ContaCam's installation folder under microapache\htdocs\languages and microapache\htdocs\styles taking the existing ones as example. After that's done just reopen the Camera Basic Settings dialog and the new languages and/or styles will appear by the respective file name.

4. Storage

  • MP4 files are the preferred choice as they are supported by all modern browsers. AVI files are generally not viewable in a browser without a plugin, so it's only advisable to use AVI if you plan to NOT use the web interface. In that case the AVI files creation has the advantage to be less CPU intensive because the used MPEG-4 codec is faster than the H.264 codec employed in MP4 files.
  • Keep files for is set by default to a month and can be adapted to your needs. Please wait at least 15 minutes to see the removal of old days.
  • Minimum disk free space in percent is set to avoid filling your hard-disk and crashing the system. For example on a computer with 1000 GB of hard-disk, 5% means that if your HD has left less than 50 GB (5% of 1000 GB) of free space the oldest video files are delete until the free space is again above 50 GB (the cleaning granularity is by day, so that only entire days are deleted and not single videos inside a day). Setting the minimum disk free space to 0% makes you responsible for the cleaning / checking of your hard-disk.
  • Maximum camera folder size is useful when saving the files in a place of limited storage like a cloud drive or a network share with user quota. Oldest video files are delete until the used size drops belove the chosen maximum camera folder size. Setting a value of 0 disables this check.

5. Notification

Enter the Email Settings and fill a check mark for the wished notification(s).

Basic setup is done and your camera is ready to be used. After pressing the OK button it's possible to watch the movement detections or the snapshots on your web browser by calling Browse from the View menu or using the globe top toolbar button.
